The Country Day School is a private school located in King City, Ontario, north of Toronto. The renovation and expansion of the campus features a new main entrance, central atrium, dining hall, and upper school classrooms. The triangular timber framing of the central skylight in tandem with the intersecting window mullions cast subtle shadows throughout the open space which shift throughout the day and over the course of the school year as the seasons change. This creates an awareness to the quality of natural light outside, communicating to the body that the environment is comprehensible and manageable.
This project represents early explorations of midrange fractal patterns in the form of repeating triangles and diamonds. This initial investigation into positive ambiguity has since expanded to include juxtaposing curved and straight mass timber elements, seen in projects such as Lauremont School Bayview and Elgin Mills Campuses and Royal St. George’s College.
