First Look: Ontario Independent School

A comprehensive masterplan is in the works for an International Baccalaureate independent school in Breslau, Canada. The project includes a new timber construction main entrance canopy, drop off space, and student commons that bridges the existing campus with the chapel.

The roof of the student commons curves upwards at its centre to create a light drawer, allowing natural lighting to flood the vibrant social space. The curved edge of the canopy is intersected by a series of straight timber structural members, creating a fractal patterns. This playful geometry allows the mind to interpret a variety of shapes within the layers of the roof structure, triggering a sense of positive ambiguity.
