Project Highlight: Mass Timber at the Credit Valley Hospital

The atrium of the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Canada features four glulam mass timber columns arranged in an arch cross the triangular space. Each three-part column is roughly 2.5m in diameter at its base, taking a rounded profile upwards to the roof. The columns dissect and branch outwards similar to the branches of a tree, maintaining a connection to nature through materiality as well as geometry.

The roof is composed of a metal deck and glulam timber beams that run perpendicular to each diamond shaped segment of the roof. Three diamond shaped skylights pierce the roof deck in a radial pattern and are bisected by the timber beams. The linear beams in combination with the branch-like timber members sprouting from the columns create a series of fractal patterns that generate a sense of positive ambiguity.
