Tye Farrow has been appointed as an advisor to the newly inaugurated Institute for the Study of Hope, Dignity and Wellbeing at the acclaimed Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The research institute was launched in March 2025, the first of its kind to study the impact of hope in healthcare environments. Tye Farrow joined the inaugural meeting of global experts in the field of medicine and allied professionals to initiate his advisory of the institute.

Led by oncologist Dr. Ben Corn, the Institute’s mandate is to advance the study of hope (Snyders Hope Theory) including the impact of hope upon multiple diseases. “Hope is not the same as optimism or wishful thinking,” explains Dr. Corn, rather it is a perception of what is possible, it is an active, ongoing, and living thing.

The reinforcement of hope in healthcare institutions such as cancer centres can be incredibly beneficial to patient wellbeing. The SZMC Helmsley Cancer Center, or ‘The Butterfly’, aims to embody hope through its uplifting and nature-infused space. On the lowest level of the Helmsley Cancer Center, a garden courtyard is located outside of the radiation welcomes patients’ post-treatment. Terraces step upwards from the garden courtyard creating an atrium that runs throughout the entire building, siphoning natural daylight across 5 floors to generate a hopeful environment.

The institute’s research will surround hope’s place in society-at-large through pioneering and dynamic, hope-based interventions. The interventions have been increasingly validated by leading international health care and scientific forums, including The Science of Hope” in the 20th Anniversary Edition of the journal Lancet - Oncology.

The institute is also pioneering the use of digital technology with healthcare providers, patient advocates, and volunteers, to deliver hope-based support which addresses critical needs of providers and users in the health care system.
